Verbal Operants in ABA: The 6 Types Every BCBA Should Know

A learner might label a hundred flashcards correctly and still not be able to ask for a snack. That’s because labeling and requesting are separate skills. 

Progress on one skill can outpace another, and the distinction can go unnoticed. This is the issue that Skinner's framework of verbal operants was built to address.

Verbal operants in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) help determine exactly which skill needs work. Here's what each category of verbal operants covers and how to work them into treatment plans.

What are verbal operants in ABA?

Verbal operants are six categories that sort language by function, not by grammar or vocabulary.

B.F. Skinner, a psychologist and founder of ABA, laid out this system in his 1957 book Verbal Behavior. It still shapes how Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) write and score language goals.

Instead of asking what a word means, the framework asks what causes someone to say it and what keeps them saying it.

For example, a learner who says "cookie" because they're hungry is doing something different from a learner who says "cookie" because someone held one up and asked, "What's this?" It’s the same word, but a different operant, and each scenario belongs to a different ABA teaching plan.

Two of the field's most common tools, the Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program (VB-MAPP) and the Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills-Revised (ABLLS-R), are built around these categories.

This functional approach has carried through decades of research on autism interventions. Teaching methods have changed since 1957, but the categories haven’t.

The 6 types of verbal operants in ABA

The six verbal operant categories are: mand, tact, echoic, intraverbal, textual, and transcription.

Each is evoked by something different and reinforced by something different, which is why clinicians track them as separate skills instead of one broad "expressive language" score.

Mand (requesting)

A mand is a request a learner makes to get something they want or need.

A motivating condition like hunger, thirst, or boredom evokes it, and providing the item or activity reinforces it. A thirsty learner who asks for "juice" has manded. Giving them the juice is the reinforcement.

Mands are usually the first operant BCBAs target, since the motivation already exists for the learner. Training involves building a clearer way to ask for what they already want.

Early mand training reliably increases functional communication in young children with autism, which also supports starting here.

Tact (labeling)

Tacting means that the learner is labeling something they’ve noticed in their environment, whether they’ve seen, heard, smelled, or otherwise sensed it.

A nonverbal cue evokes it, like a dog walking past. Pointing and saying "dog" is the tact, and the reinforcement is praise or attention

Tacts build vocabulary fast, but on their own, they don't go far. A learner can rack up dozens of tacts and still struggle to mand.

Echoic (vocal imitation)

When a learner hears a sound or word and repeats it back exactly, that's an echoic operant.

When a therapist says "ball," and the learner repeats "ball," the reinforcement is again praise or similar attention.

Echoic control depends on a learner's vocal play and motor imitation skills, and it's closely tied to building independent speech. That's partly why echoic training usually starts early in treatment planning.

Intraverbal (conversational responding)

Intraverbal operants cover conversation. Each is a verbal response to what someone else said, without repeating their exact words.

A question or comment evokes it, and the listener's reaction usually reinforces it. Answering "Sam" to the question "What's your name?" is an intraverbal response.

The range in conversation makes intraverbals one of the hardest operants to teach and some of the most valuable once they stick.

Textual (reading aloud)

A textual operant is spoken language that matches written text, word for word.

A learner sees the word "cat" and says it aloud, and the Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) might reinforce this with a simple nod or "Nice reading." 

Language delays often carry reading and writing difficulties into the classroom, which is why textual training is usually linked to academic goals.

Transcription (writing or spelling)

Writing or typing words to match spoken language, without seeing the words written first, is transcription.

Hearing "cat" and writing "c-a-t" is an example of this operant, and praise or accuracy feedback reinforces it.

Transcription becomes relevant as learners build spelling and written communication skills alongside verbal ones.

Why treatment plans track verbal operants separately

In treatment plans, BCBAs track verbal operants separately because each operant develops on its own timeline, not as a single communication skill.

A learner might accurately label forty animals and be unable to ask a peer to play. Approaching operants individually captures progress with more nuance and helps the BCBA tailor the plan accordingly.

It also supports reauthorization, when payors expect specific targets, specific data, and specific progress by operant, not a broad summary of communication skills.
