"Engages with peers" is too vague and open to interpretation, but "initiates a verbal request toward a peer during a 5-minute free play window" works well. The more precise your definition, the more reliable your data, and the more confident your instructional decisions.

For learners working on foundational skills, strong pinpoints might look like:

  • Vocal mands (requests): Number of independent requests per minute
  • Sight-word identification: Number of correct reads per minute
  • Intraverbal responses (verbal replies to questions or prompts): Number of correct responses per minute

Take your time here. An unclear definition creates noise in your data that compounds over weeks of measurement.

2. Set fluency aims

Once a behavior is pinpointed, you need a fluency aim: a target frequency that defines mastery. An accuracy target of 80% might be met by a learner who's guessing strategically. A fluency aim can't, because it requires the skill to be both correct and automatic.

These targets are typically drawn from research into the rate of responding that predicts skill maintenance and generalization. A fluency aim for mand training might be around 15 correct mands per minute. For sight-word reading, aims are often 80–100 words per minute, depending on the learner's age and goals.

The benchmarks come from decades of precision teaching research and represent the performance level at which a skill becomes durable.

3. Use timed practice trials

Precision teaching uses short, timed probes, often 1 minute each, to measure performance. These are distinct from standard discrete trial training blocks. The goal is to sample how fast and accurately a learner can respond, not to run teaching trials.

In practice, this might mean:

  • Presenting a set of flashcards and counting how many the learner responds to correctly in 60 seconds
  • Running a 1-minute vocal mand probe at the start of a session before introducing demands

4. Make data-based decisions weekly

  • Data meeting or exceeding the fluency aim: Confirm mastery and move on. Don't keep drilling a skill the learner has already built.
