The 4 Functions of Behavior in ABA: How to Spot Each One

Two behaviors can look identical but stem from different motivations. A learner might tap the table because they want out of a task or just because tapping feels good. You often can't tell which is which through casual observation.

Functions of behavior in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) are the reasons behind behavior. They’re something every Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) has to sort out early, since they shape the whole treatment plan.

Misidentify a function, and your plan can end up reinforcing the behavior it's meant to reduce.

What are the four functions of behavior in ABA?

The four functions of behavior in ABA are attention, escape or avoidance, access to tangibles, and sensory input.

Together, they account for more than 90% of documented outcomes when a behavior is formally tested. 

Behavior analysts link a behavior to its function based on the consequence that follows it, not on how the behavior appears.

The same behavior, like head-hitting, can be maintained by different consequences from person to person. That held up when self-injury was tested against different conditions before and after: one person's version might be keeping a demand away, while another's might be attracting a caregiver's attention.

Once you know what to watch for before and after the behavior, each function has a recognizable pattern:

Attention

Attention-maintained behavior reliably gets a reaction from someone nearby.

The reaction doesn't have to be positive. A correction like "Stop that" can work as much as a laugh or a hug, since each counts as a response from another person.

Common examples include calling out during independent work, tapping a peer repeatedly, or escalating behavior right as a caregiver steps away. If behavior ramps up when attention diminishes and settles down when the response is restored, attention is doing the work.

Escape or avoidance

A behavior is escape-maintained when it helps end or prevent a task, demand, or situation that the learner finds unpleasant.

Throwing materials, dropping to the floor during a transition, or acting aggressively right before a demand can all delay or remove a task, at least for a moment.

The behavior doesn't need to fully cancel the task to get reinforced. Even a short delay, like a break while staff resets materials, can be enough to strengthen the pattern.

Access to tangibles

A tangible-maintained behavior sticks around because it ensures access to a specific activity or item, like a toy, snack, tablet, or preferred seat.

Grabbing, screaming, or refusing to hand something back are typical examples when persistence gets the item more reliably than a request.

Sensory or automatic reinforcement

A sensory-maintained behavior keeps happening because it feels good on its own, no matter who's around.

Hand-flapping, rocking, or humming might continue whether the room is crowded or empty of other people.

This function is generally the hardest of the four to work with, since there's no social response to withhold or redirect. A common fix is offering a competing sensory activity, like a fidget toy, that gives similar input.

How BCBAs identify the function of a behavior

BCBAs identify functions through a functional behavior assessment (FBA). It starts with gathering indirect and direct data, and moves into a full functional analysis when needed.

Indirect data comes from caregiver interviews and rating scales. Direct methods include watching the behavior happen and logging antecedent-behavior-consequence (ABC) data across several sessions.

If the ABC data suggests more than one function, the BCBA may run a functional analysis. It’s also a good idea if the stakes are high, like when the behavior could cause injury.

A functional analysis involves testing a demand condition, an attention condition, a tangible condition, and an alone condition one at a time, to see which condition reliably triggers the behavior.

This overall assessment is key. Plans built on FBAs tend to be more effective at reducing challenging behavior than plans that skip the assessment step. Guessing at the function is a common reason that ABA treatment stalls.

Why the right function changes the treatment plan

Develop a plan around the wrong function, and you may inadvertently encourage new challenging behavior, in addition to wasting session hours. A plan that offers a break every time a learner protests will reinforce escape, even if the actual function is attention. 

Once the right function is identified and confirmed, the next step is usually teaching a replacement behavior.

This is called functional communication training: teaching a card exchange, a sign, or a spoken request that gets the same attention, break, input, or item that the challenging behavior used to achieve.

The approach is consistently effective. For instance, a 2025 meta-analysis found that in young children with autism, teaching a function-matched replacement and reinforcing it led to large reductions in challenging behavior.
