Consequence Strategies in ABA: 3 Types & How They Work
Choosing the wrong consequence strategy in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) can reinforce the challenging behaviors you’re trying to reduce. Here's what consequence strategies are, the three main types used in practice, and how to pick the right one for each behavior.
What are consequence strategies in ABA?
Consequence strategies in ABA are planned responses that come right after a behavior. A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) selects this response to encourage the desired change in that behavior over time.
Consequence strategies are the third part of the ABC model, also called the “three-term contingency.” It breaks targeted behavior into three parts:
- The antecedent (what happens right before)
- The behavior itself
- The consequence (what happens just after)
Every consequence strategy is designed to make a behavior stronger or weaker. For example, you might reinforce requests for breaks or withhold attention after a tantrum.
For a strategy to work well, it needs to match the reason, or function, behind the behavior. A BCBA works to pin down that function as accurately as possible before choosing a consequence strategy.
What are the main types of consequence strategies in ABA?
The main types of consequence strategies in ABA are: reinforcement-based, extinction, and punishment-based. Here's how each of the three plays out.
Reinforcement-based strategies can be positive or negative. Positive reinforcement adds something the learner wants right after the behavior, like praise or a preferred item.
Negative reinforcement removes an unpleasant stimulus or task. For example, if asking for a break is difficult for a learner, they receive a “Break” card to use instead.
Punishment-based strategies are classed the same way. Positive punishment adds something that isn’t wanted after the behavior, like extra practice repetitions. Negative punishment removes something desired, like access to a preferred item.
Both are used less often than reinforcement-based strategies, and always under strict ethical constraints. The ethics code of the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) directs BCBAs to choose the least restrictive procedure that’s likely to be effective.
How to use differential reinforcement as a consequence strategy in ABA
Differential reinforcement works by reinforcing one behavior while withholding reinforcement for another.
Reinforcement on its own simply means following a behavior with something that makes it more likely to happen again. Differential reinforcement adds a comparison: one behavior gets strengthened while another gets nothing.
There are three forms, each suited to a different kind of challenging behavior.
DRA
Differential reinforcement of alternative behavior (DRA) reinforces a specific replacement behavior that serves the same purpose as the challenging one.
If a learner hits to get a break, you teach and reinforce a hand-raise or a break card instead, so the need behind the behavior still gets met.
It’s often paired with functional communication training, where the learner is taught a communicative response, like a word, sign, or picture exchange to replace the challenging behavior.
This combination tends to produce large reductions in challenging behavior, with stronger effects at school, compared with home.
DRI
Differential reinforcement of incompatible behavior (DRI) reinforces a behavior that can't physically happen at the same time as the challenging one.
A learner can't run around the room while sitting in a chair, so sitting becomes the reinforced target.
DRO
Differential reinforcement of other behavior (DRO) reinforces the learner for any stretch of time the challenging behavior doesn't happen, no matter what they're doing instead.
It's typically chosen when there isn't one clear replacement behavior to reinforce.
How does extinction work as a consequence strategy in ABA?
Extinction works because the behavior stops paying off. Once the usual reinforcement disappears, there's no reason for the behavior to continue.
For example, if a learner's tantrum used to get them attention, extinction breaks the link: attention no longer follows the tantrum.
BCBAs generally pair extinction with a reinforcement-based strategy like DRA, by removing reinforcement for one behavior and reinforcing a replacement instead. This combination tends to produce lower rates of the original behavior than DRA on its own.
One thing to plan for: With extinction, behavior sometimes gets worse before it gets better. This is called an extinction burst, a temporary spike in the behavior right after reinforcement stops.
How often do these bursts occur? Researchers have arrived at different conclusions. One clinical sample found them in 62% of cases, while lab-based reanalyses found rates as low as 0.0–19.8%. Regardless, BCBAs should inform caregivers of the risk that behavior may get worse before it improves.
Extinction only works if everyone can maintain it every time the behavior happens. And some behaviors are tougher to reduce than others using this approach, particularly those that were reinforced consistently before ABA treatment began.
Punishment as an ABA consequence strategy
Punishment-based strategies work by adding or removing something right after a behavior to make that behavior less likely to happen. Removing a reward earned earlier or stopping reinforcement for a set period are two examples.
These procedures should be used rarely and only after reinforcement-based options have been tried or ruled out, as the BACB's ethics code advises. They should never be the default approach.
Punishment-based strategies can suppress a behavior quickly, but they don't teach a replacement skill on their own, which is one reason reinforcement-based options are recommended first.
When a punishment-based procedure is necessary, such as for behavior that poses safety risks, it should be:
- Time-limited
- Closely supervised
- Paired with reinforcement for alternative behavior
How do you choose the right consequence strategy in ABA?
The right consequence strategy depends on the function of the behavior. A behavior that's maintained by attention needs a different approach from one maintained by escaping from a task, even if the two behaviors look identical.
This is why a BCBA completes a functional behavior assessment before they develop the treatment plan.
The assessment typically identifies at least one of these four functions:
- Attention
- Escape
- Access to a tangible item
- Automatic (sensory) reinforcement
The first three are socially mediated, meaning another person is providing the reinforcement, so extinction is straightforward: withhold the attention, don't allow the escape, don't hand over the item, and reinforce a replacement behavior instead.
Automatic, sensory-maintained behavior is the outlier. No one else is delivering reinforcement, so there's nothing external to withhold. This means extinction isn't available in the same way.
That's usually where DRO or DRI carry more weight, or where a punishment-based procedure gets considered sooner than it would for the other three functions.
Once the function is clear, BCBAs typically:
- Default to a reinforcement-based strategy first.
- Add in extinction when it's safe and sustainable.
- Consider punishment when less intrusive approaches haven’t worked, or the risk is too severe to wait.
The choice of consequence strategy always sits with the BCBA supervising the learner’s Registered Behavior Technician (RBT). It’s not something an RBT or caregiver should decide on the go.
