A high-probability request sequence increases compliance by presenting a string of easy, familiar requests before a harder one.

This builds behavioral momentum: once a learner is on a roll with simple requests, they're more likely to comply with the request that usually gets refused.

Example: A learner resists cleaning up toys. Instead of jumping straight to "clean up," you ask them to give you five, spin in a circle, and touch their nose first. Then you deliver the cleanup request while the momentum is on your side.

Behavioral momentum strategies, especially the high-probability command sequence, are linked to steady gains in compliance and on-task behavior in students with autism.

NCR

This approach delivers a reinforcer on a set schedule, regardless of what the learner is doing.

Because access to the reinforcer is no longer associated with a challenging behavior, that behavior has less reason to occur.

Example: A learner engages in attention-seeking behavior during independent work. Instead of waiting for the behavior to occur, you check in and provide brief attention every 3 minutes, whether or not the behavior has happened.

NCR can produce a strong, consistent reduction in challenging behavior, especially when the reinforcer matches the behavior's function.

FCT

This intervention teaches a learner an appropriate way to request what they want or need, replacing a challenging behavior that had served the same purpose.

It targets behavior that functions as communication, since the goal is giving the learner a faster, more reliable way to get the same outcome.

Example: A learner hits their RBT when asked to complete a nonpreferred task. Teach them to hand over a "break" card instead, and honor that request consistently, so it becomes a reliable replacement.

FCT is linked to meaningful reductions in challenging behavior, alongside gains in communication skills, though results vary by learner.

Visual supports and choice-making

Visual supports use pictures, symbols, or written schedules to show a learner what's happening now and what's coming next, so transitions and expectations feel predictable instead of sudden.

Example: A learner struggles every time playtime ends. A first-then board showing "first cleanup, then snack" gives them a visual sign that the transition is coming, as well as an incentive to comply.

Visual supports can facilitate a complementary strategy: choice-making. This involves giving a learner control over small decisions, like which worksheet to start with.

Some learners respond because choosing grants them access to a preferred outcome, while others respond to just having a say. Either way, choice-making can lower overall resistance to a task.

How to choose the right antecedent intervention

  • What function does the behavior serve? Start with a functional behavior assessment to identify the reason behind the challenging behavior. Attention, escape, access to a tangible, or automatic reinforcement each call for a different antecedent intervention.
